LECTURES

  • Week 1 - Lecture 1 (30.08.2023)
This week , Mr vinod just introduce us about the advanced typography and let us to watch the Youtube class to learn the systems of typographic. Also we needs to do the exercise for task 1.

Typo_1_Typographic Systems

Design is based on structural system which are:
👇
Axial
Radial
Dilatational
Random
Grid
Modular
Transitional
Bilateral
...

Typographical organization is complex because the elements are dependent on communication in order to function. Hierarchy, order of reading, legibility and contras are the additional criteria. The typographic systems are similar to what the architect term shape grammars. They are similar but not the same.  It's the system has a sets of rules that provide a sense of purpose that focuses and direct the decision making. It provide a solid frame work for the learner.

Axial system: all the elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis, it doesn't have to be straight.
Radial system: All elements are extended from a point of focus.
Dilatational system: All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion. It could b simple or complex.
Random system: elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.
Grid system: A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
Transition system: An informal system of layered banding. The differences of the size and the width is also important to create hierarchy.
Modular system: A series of non- objective elements that are constructed in as a standardized units. The unit can be randomly place even though not within a larger grid.
Bilateral system: All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.

  • Week 2 - Lecture 2 (06.09.2023)
This week , Mr Vinods check my exercise and gave me feedback to my work. It have lots of problems so i have to change.

  • Principles of Design Composition: Emphasis, isolation, repetition, balance (symmetry/asymmetry), alignment, perspective, rhythm, contrast.

  • The Rule of Thirds: A photographic guide to composition. The intersecting lines are used as a guide to place the points of interest, within the given space.

  • Environmental Grid: Based on the exploration of an existing structure or numerous structures combined.

  • Form and Movement: Based on the exploration of an existing Grid Systems. The placement of a form on a page, over many pages creates movement. The forms could represent images, text or colour.

  • Week 3 - Lecture 3 (13.09.2023)
This week , Mr Vinods check my work and gave me feedback, and i needs to redo it.

The first mechanically produced letterforms were designed to directly imitate handwriting.  Handwriting would become the basis or standard for form, spacing and conventions mechanical type would try and mimic. And the earliest system of actual writing, written from left to right and evolved from pictograms.

  • Early greek (5th C. B.C.E.): Drawn freehand, not constructed with compasses and rules, and they had no serifs. In time the strokes of these letters grew thicker, the aperture lessened, and serifs appeared.

  • Roman Uncials: By the 4th century Roman letters were becoming more rounded, the curved form allowed for fewer strokes and could be written faster.

  • English Half Uncials (8th C.): In England, the uncial evolved into a more slanted and condensed form.

  • Carolingian Minuscule: Capitals at the start of a sentence, spaces between words and punctuation. It was this style that became the pattern for the Humanistic writing of the fifteenth century; this latter, in turn, was the basis of our lower-case roman type.

  • Black Letter (12-15 C. CE): Characterised by tight spacing and condensed lettering. Evenly spaced verticals dominated the letterform. Condensing line spacing and letter spacing reduced the amount of costly materials in book production.

  • The Italian Renaissance: Newly rediscovered letterforms Antica. The renaissance analysis of form that was being applied to art and architecture was directed toward letterform — resulting in a more perfect or rationalised letter.

  • Week 4 - Lecture 4 (20.09.2023)
In this week, Mr.Vinods let us doing the Task 2 sketch and compelte the Task 1 , he gave us enough time to do prepare it and he also introduce how to do Task 2 and showing some examples for us.😇

Type Design Process :

-Research
-Sketching
-Digitisation
-Testing
-Deploy

Typeface Construction :

-Using grids (with circular forms) can facilitate the construction of letterforms and is a possible method to build/create/design your letterform.

Construction and considerationsn :

-Different forms and constructions must be taken into account when designing a new type. An important visual correction is the extrusion of curved (and protruding) forms past the baseline and cap line (overshoot). This also applies to vertical alignment between curved and straight forms.

INSTRUCTIONS

Typographic Systems ( Week 1)

So this is the first exercise of our week 1. From the execise we need to explore 8 typographic system with the given written which are:

Finding Type Artwork ( week 2 )

So in this week , we needs to do the" Finding Type Artwork ".

This is the progress:
👇
  1. Finding an image.
  2. Deconstructing an image.
  3. Identifying letterforms.
  4. Extracting letterforms.
  5. Identify a reference.
  6. Refining letterforms.

First i found the iamge, and i download it then post it on AI.

Then i started extract it one by one for each letters which is" C H A I R "

fig 1. extract "C"

fig 2. extract "H"

fig 3. extract "I"

Then this is the fonts that i created after Mr Vinods helps and feedback😄.👇

So this is the final work of TPYE&PLAY (WEEK 3)

FEEDBACK

Week 2
General Feedback: Lots of problems for exercise 1. Specific Feedback: The Radial is ok but the modular are not accpeted , also the Transitional needs a point and Dilatational needs to start at circle.

Week 3 Specific Feedback: From my work, because i did it just from last night, so it's too simple and i watse the picture because it has lots of elements to do. If is not the experience designer, i should doing it at least 7 days. So needs to keep compelte.

Week 4 General feedback: Just the surface design. Specific feedback: Needs to explain something and the thinking on the design. What you needs.

REFELCTION

Experience

With the help of my teacher, I learned more about font skills and the application of Type in computer software.

Observation

Advanced typesetting is more detailed and allows me to learn more about computer software.

Findings

I found advanced typesetting more difficult and needed to summarize the experience of the previous semester to complete the task.

This page introduces some types of fonts, which I find more interesting.

It lets me know the different classification of each English character and the expression of its elements.
